Red vs Blue? Open Records Ought to be Transparent.

This editorial from yesterday’s Journal Sentinal points out something that can be easy to lose track of in a highly partisan state: No one in public office likes open records. It doesn’t matter if they are elephants or asses, public officials are not interested in making it easy for citizens to examine what goes on behind their closed doors.

Some examples: The Republican Governors of Missouri and Texas, have both come under fire for their poor e-mail retention policies, meanwhile the Democratic Governor of New Jersey got busted for refusing to turn over e-mails he sent to his girlfriend (who was also a powerful lobbyist in the state).

I guess the lesson here is that party lines don’t trump the strong desire many in the government have to hide their actions.
